Goodwell, Okla. -- The St. Mary’s women’s basketball team rolled into the Oklahoma Panhandle State gym on Thursday night with a regional ranking and a 16-game winning streak. When they left the court after the contest, they were very fortunate to have their winning streak alive. In a very hard fought game, and thanks to an outstanding second half, St. Mary’s took the victory, 68-61.
The Lady Aggies opened up very fast and owned a 17- 5 lead with seven minutes gone in the game. It was tight for the entire first half and with twenty seconds left before intermission, OPSU’s Alisha Sladek nailed a short deuce to put her team ahead 32-30 as the teams went to the break.
The second half was a dogfight just about all the way, with the score tied several times, and St. Mary’s ahead by six (64-58) with 1:50 left on the clock. OPSU’s Jasmine Williams converted a three point play to make it 64-61 at the 1:35 mark, but the Lady Aggies could get no closer.
Williams led all scorers with 20 points, and also pulled down a game high ten rebounds. Alisha Sladek scored nine while Jeanna Cramer and Ceara Brown each scored seven.
With their win, St. Mary’s raised their season record to 18-4 and maintained first place in the Heartland Conference with a 9-0 mark. With the loss, the Lady Aggie season record stood even at 11-11 and they held on to fourth place in the league with a 4-5 record.
The Lady Aggies will be on their home court again on Saturday evening at 6:00 for a game with another conference opponent – St. Edward’s University.
