Lady Aggies Earn Big Conference Win Against Newman
- By Scott Puryear of OPSU Sports on 2/22/08

Goodwell, Okla. -- On Thursday night, the Oklahoma Panhandle State women’s basketball team continued their march toward the Heartland Conference playoffs with a hard fought 68-65 victory over Newman University. The Lady Aggies led 42-34 at the halftime break.

The game was dead even at 65-65 with 55 seconds left on the clock, but a pair of high pressure free throws by Jasmine Williams and another by Alisha Sladek sealed the Lady Aggie win.

The Lady Aggies lost to Newman in their first meeting of the season, 60-52 in the Newman gym a month ago.

The victory boosted the Lady Aggie season record to 13-11 and their 6-5 record in the Heartland Conference places them in a solid fourth place. The top four teams qualify for the league post season tournament next month.

Williams has established herself as one of the best inside players in the conference, and on Thursday the 6’1 junior scored 20 points and grabbed ten rebounds - her 18th “Double-Double” of the season.

Megan Hamilton also had a good shooting eye for OPSU as the senior guard scored 18 points, all of them on long range three point shots. Sladek had a dozen points and Sarah Polson scored nine. A very key individual stat in the three point OPSU victory came courtesy of senior guard Connie Maas, who recorded a game high five steals.

Diana Santillan scored 21 for Newman (now 4-8 in league play and 6-19 overall).

The Lady Aggies will play their final home game of the season on Saturday against Lincoln in another Heartland Conference match-up. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m.
