Goodwell, Okla. -- The Oklahoma Panhandle State women’s basketball fought all the way on Saturday night, but lost a tough game to the University of the Incarnate Word, 65-61.The Heartland Conference contest was played in San Antonio, Texas.
The Lady Aggies entered the game with a four game winning streak and both teams had already clinched spots in the Heartland playoffs, set to begin Friday.
The Cardinals and the Lady Aggies had met earlier this season (on January 10) with the Cardinals winning 62-56 in Goodwell. This one was even closer as the Lady Aggies trailed by just one point (27-26) at the halftime break.
Though OPSU trailed by as many as 16 points near the mid-point of the second half, they worked extremely hard to get back into things and got to within four points at game’s end. After the final buzzer, they left the court with their heads high.
Jasmine Williams led the Lady Aggies with 13 points and nine rebounds. Alisha Sladek and Sarah Polson scored ten and nine respectively and Connie Maas dished out three assists.
In his first season as the Lady Aggie head coach, Brad Vanden Boogaard led his squad to a 15-12 regular season record. After Saturday’s game he said he was very proud of the team and that they continue to prove they can play with any team in the Heartland Conference.
The OPSU league record is now 8-6. With their victory, the Cardinals upped their season record to 17-10 (11-3 in the conference).
By finishing in the top four of the eight team league, the Lady Aggies have qualified as the fourth seed in the conference tournament which begins Friday in Denton, Texas. OPSU will face top seeded St. Mary’s (23-4; 14-0) in the opening round and the tip-off is set for noon.
