Goodwell, Okla. - Armed with an excellent game plan, as well as the will to win, the Oklahoma Panhandle State women’s basketball team powered their way to a 66-58 victory over Fort Hays State on Wednesday night. With the win, the Lady Aggies upped their season record to 3-0.
It was a tight game between two evenly matched teams and the Lady Aggies held a 35-32 advantage at halftime.
Fort Hays (now 1-1) came out for the second half in determined fashion, but OPSU made several adjustments and led by as many as ten points in the final minutes. A major key to the OPSU win was their dominance on the boards, earning 47 rebounds against Fort Hays’ 32.
Lady Aggie head coach Brad Vanden Boogaard rarely takes credit for a victory and this time praised the work of his assistant coach, Stacy Nordquist, who handled the scouting of the Fort Hays team.
Sedra Watkins (senior forward) came off the bench early and sparked the Lady Aggies with the game’s only “Double-Double” with a dozen points and a dozen rebounds. Junior forward Jasmine Williams scored 16 and grabbed nine rebounds. Both Watkins and Williams were perfect from the foul line in four tries each.
Alisha Sladek score nine points, Cherrelle Tillis scored eight, Sarah Polson added seven to go with six rebounds, and the hardworking Connie Maas scored six points, pulled down seven rebounds, handed out five assists, and had four very big steals.
Vanden Boogaard added that the practice time the Lady Aggies spent on rebounding paid off and he was very pleased with the teamwork and overall effort of his squad - still undefeated.
