Tough Overtime Loss for the Lady Aggies
by Scott Puryear on 12/31/05
Goodwell, OK - Two good women’s
college basketball teams mixed it up here on Friday night,
and regulation time was not enough to decide the battle.
With the scored tied at 59-59, New Mexico Highlands and Oklahoma
Panhandle State went into overtime, and the Cowgirls of NMH
pulled out the 67-65 win.
“We have to shoot better,” said OPSU coach Jerry
Olson after the game. “But I saw some really good things
and the girls did not give up,” the veteran coach added.
NMH held a 27-19 halftime advantage,
but thanks to a valiant team effort and some hot shooting
by Brandi Lewis, the Lady Aggies stormed back and Sarah Furgeson’s
basket tied the game at 59-59 at the end of regulation.
Both teams worked hard for the win and NMH finally pulled
it out in the overtime period. The loss evened the OPSU record
at 6-6.
Lewis burned the nets for a game high 27 points and had NMH
puzzled for most of the night.
Bridgett Boykin came off the bench and contributed 12 points
to the OPSU cause.
The Lady Aggies will be in Ada, Oklahoma to match up with
East Central on Tuesday night.
