OPSU’s Sarah Furgeson – An
Uncommon Freshman
by Scott Puryear of Aggie Sports on 12/14/05
Goodwell, OK - It is
uncommon for a true freshman to step to the front at any level
of four year college basketball. Sarah Furgeson, of the women’s
team at Oklahoma Panhandle State University, is one who has
done just that.
Furgeson joined the Lady Aggies this season, after an honored
high school career in Sudan, Texas. She has started nine of
ten games so far and has shown the ability to score, handle
the ball, and play defense against more experienced players.
OPSU head coach Jerry Olson said, “Sarah
has been a big surprise with her ability to make big plays
and big free throws when the game is on the line. She continues
to get better at being a floor general but has to be even
more vocal.”
On the season, Furgeson is averaging
5.3 points per game and 3.5 rebounds per game. She also has
13 steals and her 29 assists total more than any other player
in the Heartland Conference. “Sarah
doesn’t play like a freshman most of the time,” Olson
added.
Furgeson and the rest of the Lady Aggie
team (6-4) will be in action on their home court this coming
Sunday afternoon at 2:00. Missouri Southern will be in town
and they are a good team with a 7-3 record who defeated one
of their opponents 104-28 earlier this month. It should be
a good game because this year’s Lady Aggies will not
back down from anyone.
