OPSU Football Keeps Moving Forward
- by Scott Puryear of OPSU Sports on 03/09/2007
Goodwell, Okla. - Under the watchful eye of Oklahoma Panhandle State head football coach Mike Wyatt, the 2007 recruiting class continues to grow. This week, Wyatt released the names of 13 players and a strong group it is, led by Gus Overstreet, a defensive end from Pioneer, Okla. The 6’3 and 230-pound Overstreet was named All-State and will play in both the eight-man and 11-man Oklahoma All Star games.
Another top commitment has come from Clint Matocha from West Columbia, Texas. Matocha is a 3rd team All-Texas offensive lineman from West Columbia who was coached by OPSU alum Chris Gerbich, who played for Wyatt at OPSU in the late ‘70s.
Wyatt is proud of his overall recruiting class, and concerning the recent additions, he said, “We’ve helped our cause in a number of areas, but I am particularly happy about getting Gus Overstreet and Clint Matocha. Both of those are as good a football players as anyone we’ve signed. A lot of colleges would be proud to have them on their list.”
Wyatt also helped his receiving corps with the signing of his second junior college receiver in Shad Scarborough from Northeastern Oklahoma A & M College. Scarborough joins Chris Warder from College of the Sequoias in California who will look to get Wyatt’s “No Man’s Land” passing attack untracked. Other notable newcomers include a Florida All-State kicking specialist- Tito Zumbado - and a Kansas All-State tight end, Tanner Yost of Minneola.
To date, 67 young men have committed to be a part of the Aggie program and included in that number are 19 players who have earned All-State recognition. The newest additions are:
