Wyatt Optimistic Following OPSU Spring Game
By Scott Puryear of OPSU Sports on 4/21/08
Goodwell, Okla. -Oklahoma Panhandle State head football coach Mike Wyatt guided his team through a spirited spring game on Saturday and fans left the stadium hungry for more Aggie football. Wyatt was optimistic about what he saw in the contest.
It was the offense against the defense and there were plenty of good plays and some very good hits on both sides of the ball. The Aggies picked a beautiful spring evening for the game and over three hundred fans enjoyed the action on the OPSU campus.
Wyatt said, “We got a great deal of good work done and we’ll use the films for both evaluation and teaching.”
Three different quarterbacks (Vinny Gay, Kevin Lauchland, and Andrew McGlory) each made some big plays guiding the Aggie “O.” Wyatt praised the trio, and gave the highest rating to Lauchland, for the sophomore-to-be’s command of the offense.
Wyatt also liked what he saw from running backs Darryl Brister, Jose Mendoza, and Joseph Decker.
On the defensive side of the ball, returning starters Gus Overstreet (lineman) and Matt Warner (linebacker) earned the praise of Wyatt, who also spoke highly of lineman Will Turnbo. Wyatt also said that several defensive backs showed they will “Bring the Wood” this fall.
At halftime, the 37 returning letterman from last year’s team were honored and there was also a special recognition for Larry Welch, OPSU’s only three time All-America football player.
It’s going to be an exciting fall for Aggie football, and the 2008 season will get started on August 30th against Ft. Lewis with a night game at home.
