Goodwell, Okla. - The Rangers of Northwestern Oklahoma State, led by flashy quarterback Billy Barefield, defeated Oklahoma Panhandle State 56-0 in Alva on Saturday. It was NWOSU’s Homecoming contest and a large number of OPSU fans were among the nearly 5,000 people at the game.
The Aggie offense began the game well enough and their first two drives were organized and took them well into Ranger territory. However, Ranger interceptions ended both drives and the home team turned each of the turnovers into eventual touchdowns.
Barefield completed all ten of his pass attempts for a total of 235 yards (including a 49-yard touchdown strike to Rod Gray). Barefield also gained 57 yards rushing in just five attempts and crossed the goal line twice.
The Rangers led 28-0 at the half and tacked on four unanswered touchdowns to move the score to 56-0 at the end of three quarters. Neither team scored in the fourth quarter.
OPSU quarterback Andrew McGlory led his team in passing with 19 completions in 33 attempts for 117 yards and was intercepted four times.
Aggie linebacker Matt Warner was in on 13 tackles (three of them for losses), while teammate Gus Overstreet was in on seven, including a six-yard quarterback sack.
The Rangers evened their record at 3-3 on the season while OPSU now stands 0-5. Next Saturday, the Aggies will travel to Muskogee to face Bacone (now 2-5).
