Goodwell, Okla. -- In Saturday’s fourth annual Panhandle Pork Bowl, the Rangers of Northwestern Oklahoma State beat Oklahoma Panhandle State, 41-7. The Rangers evened their season record to 3-3 while the Aggies fell to 0-5.
The major sponsor of the Panhandle Pork Bowl each year is the Oklahoma Pork Council. It was a “game on the run” with just 16 total pass completions for both teams, but with nearly 500 yards total rushing. The first half was dominated by the Ranger offense, and the second half was a battle of two determined defenses.
The fireworks belonged to the Rangers in the first half as they put up five TDs (four via the run) and went to the halftime break ahead, 34-0.
Both defenses got stingier in the second half, and each team managed only seven points. The Aggie “D” was again led their splendid senior linebacker, Ranoaldo Davis, who had a game high 15 solo tackles – three of them for losses. Chase Martin (freshman) was in on nine tackles, including two for losses, from an outside linebacker spot.
Aggie quarterback Brandon Warner scored the OPSU touchdown in the third with a nifty eight-yard scamper around right end. A nice block by John Parker (freshman from Dalhart, Texas) opened the door for Warner on the play. On the day, Warner ran for 65 yards on 14 carries and completed two passes for 27 yards, including a nice 23-yarder to David Daniels.
Daniels ran for 78 yards on just eight carries, including an exciting 40-yard dash in the second half that brought the crowd to their feet.
The Aggies will be at home again next Saturday in a Homecoming clash with Bacone College.
