Western State Tops Aggies 66-16

Goodwell, Okla. — The Aggies of Oklahoma Panhandle State University visited Western State in Gunnison, Colorado on Saturday in college football action. The Mountaineers took a 14-0 lead in the first quarter on the way to a 66-16 win.
The Mountaineers used a tough one-two combination of quarterback Dan Brethauer and running back Avionne James. Brethauer passed for 217 yards, while James ran for 163 yards and scored four touchdowns.
Quarterback Brandon Warner led the Aggies in rushing with 59 yards in 22 carries, including a five-yard touchdown. Hard running fullback Steven Boone added 48 yards on 11 tries.
Warner connected on four of his seven passes for 55 yards. One of his back-ups, freshman Adam Gates, connected on two of his four passes for 19 yards, one of which was a ten-yard touchdown to David Daniels. Daniels also led Aggie receivers with three catches for 40 yards.
Ranoaldo Davis was in on nine tackles for OPSU, two of them for losses, and Hershell Alfred and Colby Westbrook were each in on four.
It was the second win of the season for the Mountaineers, against six losses, while OPSU dropped to 0-7.
After the game, OPSU coach Kyle Davis said his freshman-dominated team played hard throughout the contest. The Aggies will be on the road again next week, as they travel to Silver City to face Western New Mexico (4-4).
