Goodwell, Okla. — A calm, 65-degree day in Silver City, New Mexico was the setting for the Oklahoma Panhandle State – Western New Mexico football game on Saturday afternoon. The home team Mustangs picked up their fifth victory of the season, this time by the score of 61-17.
The Mustangs jumped out fast with 28 first quarter points and added another 14 more in the second quarter. Ryan Brock’s 37-yard field goal put the Aggies on the board midway through the second quarter and the first half ended with the Mustangs ahead 42-3.
With just over a minute gone in the second half, OPSU quarterback Craig Maynard hit speedy senior wide receiver Desmond Evans with an exciting 77-yard touchdown pass, but the Aggies trailed 55-10 at the end of three quarters.
In the final quarter, Maynard provided more Aggie heroics with a nice 43-yard touchdown run, followed by Brock’s second extra point of the game. At the final gun, the Mustangs had the win, 61-17.
Maynard went over the century mark in rushing with 101 yards on 20 carries (along with his touchdown) and dependable fullback Steven Boone hammered his way for 44 yards in 13 carries. Maynard’s 77-yarder to Evans was his single completion in two attempts.
Roman Ivanov was in on nine tackles for the Aggies, two of them for losses. Colby Westbrook recovered a fumble to go along with his eight tackles (one for a loss). Ben Lane was in on seven stops for OPSU and Nathan Barclay and Gabe Gilmore were both in on five tackles.
Western New Mexico now stands at 5-4 on the season and the Aggies dropped to 0-8. OPSU will have their final home game of the season next Saturday against Adams State. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. in Goodwell and the game will be open to the public at no admission charge thanks to the patronage of Tri-County Electric.
