Goodwell, Okla. -- The Oklahoma Panhandle State Spring Invitational Golf Tournament was held this week on the Buffalo Dunes course in Garden City, Kansas. On Tuesday afternoon, OPSU’s Rob Hamilton and Northwestern Oklahoma’s Tom Shaw ended the tournament’s regulation 36 holes tied for the lead at 149. The two student athletes prepared for a sudden death playoff to determine the men’s champion.
Hamilton had played exceptionally well in the opening round with a tournament leading 69, but an 80 on Tuesday put him deadlocked with Shaw at the end of regulation play.
Not to be denied, the solidly built Hamilton teed it up on the 548-yard par 5 playoff hole and hammered a straight and true drive, then followed that up by drilling a four-iron shot to just ten feet from the cup. The Australian then drained the putt for an eagle and the individual championship trophy was his.
In the four team Men’s Division, Hastings College finished first, OPSU grabbed second, Northwestern captured third, and Haskell finished fourth.
OPSU’s Chris Herring was just two shots off the pace (set by Hamilton and Shaw) with a total of 151 – good for third place. The Aggies’ Robert Adams had a top ten finish as well, tied for ninth at 155.
OPSU coach Roger McKinnon wanted to see his young men bring home the team trophy, but was still pleased with the effort, saying his golfers now know what they are capable of.
On the women’s side of the tournament, six full teams competed in the field, and though they continue to improve, the Lady Aggies finished in sixth place while Adams State won the team title.
OPSU’s Marcie Langley came ever so close to a top ten finish with a two-day total of 171, good for 11th place.
