Goodwell, Okla. -- Since the early 1970s, the Belly Open Golf Tournament has been held in support of the Athletic Department at Oklahoma Panhandle State University.
This year’s event took place last weekend and nearly 60 golfers enjoyed the great golf, fun, and friendship on the challenging Sunset Hills course in Guymon.
The Belly Open’s four decade purpose has been to enhance the total OPSU athletic budget in order to continue to be competitive in the NCAA Division II as well as the fine Heartland Conference.
Every participant in this year’s event was a winner and all had a good time. It was a great opportunity to visit with the OPSU athletic staff as well as the opportunity to renew old friendships and begin new ones.
After the golfing fun, a banquet was held at the Elks Lodge near the golf course and the guests enjoyed their meal and listened to presentations by several OPSU coaches regarding their respective upcoming seasons. Head coaches who spoke included Jerry Olson (men’s basketball), Mike Wyatt (football), Brad Vanden Boogaard (women’s basketball), Nikki Cothran (softball), Jason Kueffler (baseball), Roger McKinnon (men’s golf), and Stacy Nordquist (women’s golf).
The two day tournament covered 36 holes and was made up of three-player teams competing in a best ball format. There were two flights, each with nine teams.
Winners of the First Flight (shooting 57-61/118) were Shawn Ronne, Curt Kuriyama, and Jeff Fuersteneau. Second place in the First Flight went to David Steele, Kenny Lee, and Mike Lee (62-60/122).
Winners of the Second Flight (64-60/124) were Chet Oblander, Chad Blackmore, and Jacob Tuttle. The runner-up team in the second flight (scoring 64-64/122) was made up of Wayne Manning, Serafin Ramon, and Jerry Olson.
