-by Aggie Sports 07/19/06
Goodwell, Okla. — Last weekend,
nearly 40 golfers enjoyed the competition and camaraderie
at the Belly Open Golf Tournament, held annually to benefit
Oklahoma Panhandle State University athletics.
The Belly Open is a two-day event, with driving
and putting contests on Friday and an 18-hole team scramble
on Saturday, followed by an awards/recognition dinner.
This season’s event was just as enjoyable
as in past years and in the Friday events at the Sunset Hills
course in Guymon, Chase Cooper and Shanon Butler finished first
and second respectively in the long drive contest. In the putting
contest, Travis Wolf was first and Tony McFarland was second.
The event was in full swing on Saturday at Sunset Hills,
with two flights of three golfer teams. The team of McFarland,
Cameron Speck, and Lance Childress won the Championship
Flight, turning in a score of thirteen under par. The team
of Jerry Martin, Brad Martin, and Kyle Davis (OPSU head
football coach) won the First Flight.
Serafin Ramon was the winner of Saturday’s
longest drive competition and Billy Mizer made the longest
putt.
After the golfing fun, the competitors were
joined by several members of the OPSU coaching staff at an
awards dinner held at the Guymon Elks Lodge. The meal was catered
by Guymon Kentucky Fried Chicken. Many golfers received
awards and prizes for their performances and there were
many other gifts and prizes awarded through a raffle.
Included in the raffle prizes were items from local businesses
and merchants, OPSU team apparel, plus four tickets to
a Texas Rangers game.
OPSU Athletic Director Jerry Olson served as
Master of Ceremonies and several head coaches provided commentary
on their respective upcoming seasons. Olson is also the
head coach of the women’s
basketball team and gave a preview of his squad,
as well as the men’s basketball team. Davis also
spoke of the upcoming football season, and reminded everyone
that this year’s
season opens in Goodwell on September 2, with a night
game against Emporia State.
Nikki Cothran (softball) spoke about her team,
and Jason Kueffler gave a presentation on the Aggie baseball
team. Eric Viney provided a preview of the OPSU volleyball
team and Brad Vanden Boogaard, one of the tournament
organizers, also discussed the men’s and women’s
golf programs.
There is ALWAYS fun at the OPSU Belly Open.
