Several members of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) at Oklahoma Panhandle State University recently took part in a “Community Clean-Up Day” in Goodwell.  Students athletes from virtually all the OPSU athletic teams lent a helping hand and one was the basketball team (above).  From left, Nick Malinowski, Aaron Harrison, Angelo Delgiudice, Jose Yarid, Oscar Castillo, Eddie Moss, and Curt Connor (head coach).   -Aggie Sports Photo

Goodwell, Okla.--- A Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is comprised of student athletes assembled to provide insight on the student athlete experience. The National Collegiate Athletic Association mandates that all member institutions have SAAC chapters on their respective campuses. SAAC offers input on the rules, regulations and polices that affect student athletes on NCAA member institution campuses.

The objectives of SAAC chapters around the country include:

- Generate a student athlete voice within the NCAA structure.
- Solicit student athlete response to proposed NCAA legislation.
- Recommend potential NCAA legislation.
- Review, react and comment to the governance structure on legislation, activities and subjects of interest.
- Actively participate in the administrative process of athletics programs and the NCAA.
- Promote a positive student athlete image.

Last week, the OPSU SAAC chapter organized a community service event to benefit both the OPSU community as well as the entire community of Goodwell. On April 25, about 40 student athletes and most of the OPSU coaches participated in a “Community Clean-Up” in Goodwell. “The kids wanted to do a community service project to give back to OPSU and Goodwell,” said Brad Vanden Boogaard, SAAC faculty advisor. “They wanted to clean up some of the areas around campus and in town, something they knew would benefit everybody.”

The student athletes and their coaches picked up trash along the fence at Carl Wooten Field and the OPSU golf course. They also worked along Aggie Avenue and 2nd Street. The volunteers ended the afternoon picking up trash around residential areas that many OPSU students occupy and along Highway 54, an area that every visitor to Goodwell sees. Thanks to the members of SAAC and the coaches for all they have done for OPSU and Goodwell this year!
