Etbauer and Maas — OPSU’s Best of the Best
By Scott Puryear of OPSU Sports on 5/04/08
Goodwell, Okla. - Among the most important honors given each year at Oklahoma Panhandle State University are the Male and Female Student Athletes of the year. This year’s honorees are two of the finest young people who have ever been a part of OPSU – Trell Etbauer and Connie Maas.
TRELL ETBAUER - Last year’s OPSU Male Student Athlete of the Year (and the first to repeat the honor), Etbauer has established himself as one of the finest college rodeo competitors in the country. He strongly demonstrates his citizenship, overall work ethic, and leadership in both rodeo and as a student, and will be key to a run at another national title for the Aggies.
Etbauer is a senior from Goodwell, Oklahoma and he is finishing his degree in Industrial Technology and graduating this month.
Highly respected by the administration, faculty, fellow students, his coach (Craig Latham) and teammates, Etbauer knows what it takes and has what it takes to be successful. Modest and soft spoken, Etbauer is a splendid athlete and has a room full of trophies and saddles he has won in a rodeo career that is just beginning.
CONNIE MAAS – Maas is one of the very few OPSU athletes in several years to have been a top performer in two sports (basketball and softball). A tenacious competitor, Maas is also a dedicated and determined person who has also been honored for success in her academic work. She is a leader on the court, the field and in the classroom.
Maas, of Sabetha, Kansas, is a senior majoring in Biology and she will be receiving her degree later this month. She was a sparkplug guard for the Lady Aggie basketball squad and a consistent and dependable starter (with a strong bat) for the softball team.
A two-sport college athlete is very busy for virtually the entire school year. That challenge did not slow Maas down one bit as she performed with distinction in both her sports while also being honored as an Academic All-American.
The head coaches from each of the thirteen athletic teams at OPSU honor one member of their team as Student-Athlete of the Year. Choosing from that list of 13, a selection committee determines the overall Male and Female Student Athletes of the Year based upon citizenship, scholarship, leadership, and athletic performance.
OPSU is proud to recognize Connie Maas as this year’s Female Student Athlete of the Year and Trell Etbauer as the Male Student Athlete of the Year. They truly are THE BEST OF THE BEST.
