-released by OPSU Campus Communications 06-12-05
The 2005 College National Finals Rodeo got underway in Casper, Wyoming yesterday. Contestants in the rough stock events all completed the first round of competition, and the performance included five Oklahoma Panhandle State University cowboys.
Cal Peterson, an OPSU senior from Parade, South Dakota, turned in a 74 point bull ride on Panda of Triple Vold Co., placing him 10th in the go.
Another South Dakota cowboy, recent graduate Travis Sharp of Interior, posted a 64 point ride in the bareback riding on Jack of Diamonds.
In the saddle bronc riding, freshman Trell Etbauer of Goodwell, drew Pitch Black for his first ride, and placed 14th in the first go with a 68 point ride. Dusty Hausauer, a senior from Dickinson, North Dakota, made a 65.5 point ride on Pickin Cotton, placing him 16th in the round. Matt Hebbert, another 2005 graduate from Hyannis, Nebraska and last year’s CNFR second place All-Around cowboy and third place saddle bronc rider, drew Geronimo, but missed his horse out for a no-score.
The rodeo continues today with slack in the first round competition in the rest of the events plus slack for the beginning of second round competition in the rough stock. OPSU’s Erica Brown is up in the breakaway roping, Stacey Watland in the goat tying, and Buster Holland and Etbauer in the steer wrestling. Also, Etbauer and Hausauer ride their second draw in the saddle bronc, and Sharp gets a shot at his second horse in the bareback today.
All of the second go wraps up at Tuesday evening’s performance, the third round finishes up Friday evening, and the championship round is set for 7:00 p.m. on Saturday.
