Goodwell, Okla. -- Eric Viney has taken charge of the
Oklahoma Panhandle State volleyball program and has hit
the ground running with a winning attitude. Viney has announced
that six promising new players will be joining the Lady
Aggies this fall.
Sarah Moran, of Platteville, Colorado, will join the Lady
Aggies via Lamar Community College. She will be taking
over the libero position and is a very consistent passer
and defender with a great instinct for the game. While
at Lamar, she was a team captain for two years and set
numerous school records in the 2005 season including 518
total digs, a 4.28 dig/per game average, and a single game
record of 29 digs.
Moran tallied 20 or more digs five times in 2005 and was
named to the All-Region IX South honor team. Viney said, “With
Sarah’s ability to pass and defend, she will be a
major part in OPSU Volleyball success in 2006.”
Catherine “Cat” Clay is a two-time New Mexico
4A Player of the Year whom Viney says is the type of athlete
that every volleyball program in the nation is looking
for. Coming out of Deming High School, she will perform
for OPSU as an outside and middle hitter.
Viney’s enthusiasm for OPSU Volleyball is contagious
and he said he is very excited to have Clay as a part of
the OPSU program. The first year coach added, “Cat
is the ideal athlete that every coach wants to have involved
with his program. She is extremely athletic, skilled, and
court savvy. Needless to say, the expectations we have
for Cat during her career here are limitless. Everyone
needs to keep an eye out for this athlete.”
Clay will also compete for the Lady Aggie basketball team.
Cheryl Coldwell, out of Norman, Oklahoma High School will
be a setter for the Lady Aggies. According to Viney, “Cheryl
is an extremely quick and athletic kid with a great deal
of potential. I have seen Cheryl play a number of times
and each time I watch her play it just solidifies my very
positive opinions about her. We are looking for Cheryl
to step in right away and compete for the starting setter
position.”
Cassie Zvonek is from Moore, Oklahoma and competed for
Redlands Community College. She will be an outside hitter
for the Lady Aggies and Viney said, “Cassie comes
to OPSU after just one season at Redlands CC where she
was an outside hitter. She will be a very positive influence
for our program, and has a great personality to go along
with her good athletic ability. We are looking for Cassie
to push for some significant time at the outside hitter
position. I am very happy to have Cassie on the team.”
Carli Whittler of Guymon, Oklahoma will also be joining
the OPSU program. She was both an All-Region and All-State
selection and adds depth to the position of setter for
the 2006 season. According to Viney, “Carli has a
true competitive nature that is unmatched by a lot of athletes.
Her competitiveness will help her get onto the court next
year and help her learn how to handle a complex college-level
offense. I am impressed with Carli’s work ethic and
passion to want to be the best. We need that kind of desire
in our volleyball program.”
Caryn Scofield of Guymon is also expected to join the
Lady Aggie squad and is also expected to make a contribution.
The addition of Scofield and Whittler, along with sophomore-to-be
Alisa Byers, puts three Guymon players on the Lady Aggie
roster.
Prior to joining the OPSU coaching staff, Viney coached
at North Dakota State University for two seasons. In 2003
he was head coach at Marietta (Ohio) College. At Marietta,
he led the team to an 18-13 record and earned conference
Coach of the Year honors.
Fans will be impressed with the enthusiasm Viney brings
to the OPSU gym this fall and he expects to sign several
more new players.
