Some Great Volleyball at OPSU
- by Scott Puryear of Aggie Sports on 10/12/05
Goodwell, OK - The Oklahoma Panhandle State Lady
Aggies and the Lady Bulldogs of Southwestern Oklahoma State
University played here on Tuesday night in college volleyball
action. Five members of the Southwestern team were 6’0” or
taller, and though OPSU played hard all night, the visitors
won 3-1.
The first two games of the match were hotly contested
with some very athletic play and several exchanges of the
lead. The Lady Bulldogs were victorious in those games
(30-26 and 30-23), but had to play very well to top the
hard working OPSU team.
The third game of the match was the evening’s best.
SWOSU led early, but the Lady Aggies fought back. After
a driving “kill” shot by OPSU’s Val Armstrong,
the Lady Aggies trailed 18-17. The game was exciting all
the way, and another kill by Armstrong tied the score at
29-29. OPSU soon went ahead 30-29. The lead continued to
change hands, but the determination of the Lady Aggies
prevailed in their 33-31 game victory to bring the match
score to 2-1.
In the fourth and final game of the match, Southwestern
started strongly with a 5-0 advantage, but the Lady Aggies
fought back to go ahead 9-6. The visitors came back with
their own brand of determination and went on a nice run
to take an 11-9 lead. In the end, the height of the Lady
Bulldogs told the tale as they went on to win the game
30-21 and the match 3-1.
OPSU’s Katie Denning had a team high nine kills,
while Armstrong and Kirbi Twilligear each had seven. Twilligear
also had 20 defensive digs, and Misty Sims and Misty Poteet
added 15 and 11 digs, respectively.
