SEVIS is the "Student and Exchange Visitor Information System" that is designed to update the BCIS database for collecting information concerning international students and scholars.
How does it impact international students? There have been new regulations implemented as part of the SEVIS system. Each student will receive a new immigration document (I-20 & DS-2019) that is generated in SEVIS.
What should international students do?
- Read and keep up to date on announcements from
the International Office. BCIS can make changes quickly, so it
is important that you read all emails from the International
Office. The International Office will inform you of any important
updates.
- Understand regulations concerning your status.
Monitor your documents and understand how to maintain your immigration
status. Remember that friends and departmental staff are not
immigration specialists, so refer all questions or problems concerning
your immigration status to the International Office.
- Keep your records updated. BCIS requires all
events such changes in address, major, degree program, extensions,
and reduced course load be reported into SEVIS in a timely
manner.
- Plan travel arrangements early. You may need to allow time for processing a new I-20 through SEVIS.
- Reporting your change of address includes contacting the International Office to update your SEVIS record. Students who are "Special Registrants" will need to complete the AR-11- Special Registration form and send to the BCIS address.
- Transfer procedures have changed. If you want to transfer from OPSU you must request a release of your SEVIS record to the new educational institution. The release date must be current before an I-20 can be issued.
- OPSU will be updating your SEVIS record to BCIS
several times during each semester. It is very important that
you keep your SEVIS record up-to-date. If you have questions,
please contact the ISS office.
