Cameron University offers teacher preparation programs for Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Elementary-Secondary Education, and Secondary Education. Except for the Elementary Education program, certification programs do not lead to degrees. Instead, the student earns a degree in the major teaching field and must take the required professional component in addition to the degree requirements. For PK-12 and Secondary programs, a new baccalaureate program has been instituted. This fifth-year program, called CAMSTEP, may culminate in a Master of Arts in Teaching degree if the student chooses to continue beyond licensure. CAMSTEP has received state and national recognition as an innovative and highly effective way to prepare teachers.
Cameron's teacher education programs are based on the philosophy that teachers should be educated to be (1) competent in professional education, subject matter, pedagogy and research; (2) caring for every student and valuing the worth and dignity of each; (3) committed to excellence in the teaching profession; and (4) reflective decision makers and problem solvers who actively pursue their own growth as professionals and translate their growth into practice.
