Letter to Graduating Seniors

Believe It or Not--Commencement Is Approaching

The 2020 OPSU Commencement fast approaches. Rehearsal for commencement will occur on Wednesday, May 6 at 5:00 p.m. in Anchor D Arena. Here, graduates will learn about the senior line-up, processional and recessional, and walk through the receiving line. Rehearsals last 60 to 90 minutes.

Commencement begins at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 7 in Anchor D Arena. Seniors should be in the line-up which forms in the street east of the field house no later than 6:00 p.m. The OPSU commencement ceremony may last 90 minutes. Academic regalia is worn at all commencement exercises. Honor students will receive a gold honor cord from their school deans during the ceremony. First-generation students will receive a cord signifying their achievement.

Guests are strongly encouraged to arrive at the Anchor D Arena early to guarantee a good seat, yet no student may reserve any seats. Seating for handicapped guests will be plainly marked on the gym floor. Family and friends who need local lodging accommodations can secure rooms at motels/hotels in Texhoma, Guymon, and Liberal.

Commencement is a time of celebration which must be tempered with dignity, an important element of the ceremony. Commencement is the outward recognition of a graduate's academic accomplishment and is to be shared with family members and friends of the seniors and of Oklahoma Panhandle State University. Students should understand that this very public event has a two-fold purpose: first to honor graduates and second to honor OPSU.

The order form for academic regalia is available for download on the OPSU website ( immediately. Orders are due in the bookstore by March 31. Photographs will be taken by the OPSU Office of Campus Communications.

Questions should be directed to the Office of the Registrar at OPSU (580.349.1376), the Office of the Vice President of Academic Affairs (580.349.1400), Sara Jane Richter (, 580.349.1472, 580.651.7357), or Tito Aznar (, 580.349.1418).
